Villard Repeats Recognition as First-Team All-Little East

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Eastern Connecticut State University junior forward Mya Villard (Cromwell) has been voted as a first-team repeater to the All-Little East Conference women’s basketball team, announced today.

The 5-foot-11 Villard, the LEC’s Rookie-of-the-Year, led the Warriors to a turn-around season this year from an 8-6 LEC and 12-15 overall record last year to a 12-4 conference mark this year, the LEC tournament title as the No. 2 seed this year and a current 19-8 overall record heading into their 17th NCAA Division III tournament this weekend.

For the second straight year, Villard will lead the Warriors again in scoring and rebounding. A starter in every game for the second straight year, Villard averages 15.9 points and 9.4 rebounds with a 52.4 field goal percentage and 71.7 free throw percentage leading into Friday’s NCAA first-round encounter with Johns Hopkins University at Scranton, PA.

Monday, Villard repeated as LEC Player-of-the-Week after leading the Warriors to the LEC tournament title, earning tournament MVP honors in the process. In two games, she had 37 points and 22 rebounds, five assists, a 59.1 shooting percentage with 11-of-14 marksmanship from the foul line. In a 77-72 overtime win at No. 1 seed UMass Dartmouth in the final that avenged two regular-season losses to the Corsairs, she had 27 points and 17 rebounds, sinking 11-of-12 free throws.

In the LEC, Villard currently ranks fourth in scoring and third in rebounding and field goal percentage. She has 12 double-doubles and has missed eight additional ones by one rebound. Her season-highs this year came in a 99-70 LEC win at Western Connecticut Dec. 5, when she totaled 34 points and 19 rebounds on 13-of-16 shooting from the floor.
