Ryan Escoda, So., Newtown
Sophomore Ryan Escoda (Newtown) led the men for the ninth consecutive race in his two-year career and was the first Little East Conference finisher at the 47th Annual Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational Saturday. Over five miles, Escoda placed among the top seven percent with an 18th-place finish in a field of 257 finishers which represented 36 men's teams. Escoda was timed in 25:54 – just over two seconds faster than his closest LEC competitor. At this race last year, Escoda was 77th overall in a time of 27:12 in a field of 295 finishers in his second career race. Eastern’s 12th-place finish at the meet was its highest in 17 years. Last year, Escoda was the LEC Rookie Runner-of-the-Year both indoors and outdoors.
Women’s Cross Country
Kailey Schmarr, Fr., Southington
In her second career race, freshman Kailey Schmarr (Southington) was the first Little East Conference freshman at the finish in a time of 20:38 over 5,000 meters in helping the Warriors to 16th place in a field of 37 teams at the 47th Annual Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational Saturday. Schmarr was Eastern’s third finisher, placing 89th overall in a field of 263 finishers and was the 16th freshman finishers from a Division III institution. A two-year cross country athlete in high school, Schmarr was a member of her team’s State Open championship team as a junior in track & field.
