Women’s Basketball Report #5

Player-of-the-Week

Mya Villard, Jr., F, 5-10, Cromwell

Villard was selected for the honor for the second time in the last three weeks. She averaged 23.0 points and 14.0 rebounds with a 66.7 shooting percentage and 14-of-17 free-throw shooting in two Little East Conference road wins that have made the Warriors the conference’s only 4-0 team to date. Villard also blocked four shots and had four assists. In a 99-70 win at Western Connecticut Wednesday, the LEC rebounding leader had season-highs of 34 points and 19 rebounds (both totals one shy of her career-highs) and was 13-of-16 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the foul line with three blocks and three assists. In a 69-57 win at Plymouth State University Saturday, she had 12 points and nine rebound and was 6-of-8 from the foul line.

Rookie-of-the-Week

Julie Keckler, Fr., G, 5-6, Trumbull

A starter in all eight games this year, Keckler repeats the honor after averaging 10.5 points, 6.0 assists and 4.5 rebounds in an average of 26.5 minutes in two Little East Conference road wins that kept the Warriors unbeaten (4-0) in the conference. Keckler shot 55.6 percent from the floor and was 9-of-10 from the stripe.  In a 69-57 win Saturday at Plymouth State University, Keckler had 17 points, four rebounds and two assists. She was 5-of-7 from the floor (2-of-3 from distance) and 5-of-6 from the stripe. Keckler is ranked fourth in the LEC – first among freshmen --  in free-throw percentage (81.8).

Rookie-of-the-Week

Seth Thomas, Fr., F, 6-4, Norwich

 

Thomas becomes the program’s first weekly winner this year. He helped Eastern to a split of two Little East Conference road games, with a 77-62 win over previous LEC unbeaten Plymouth State University pulling the Warriors back into a share of the top spot in the conference. The team’s only freshman starter, the 6-foot-4 inch Thomas was second on the team last week with a 16.0 scoring average and shared the team lead with a 9.0 rebounding mark. He shot 52.4 percent from the floor and was 9-of-11 from the stripe. Against Plymouth, Thomas had his first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. In an 85-75 loss to Western Connecticut Wednesday, Thomas had a career-high 21 points on 7-of-12 FG and 6-of-8 FT with seven rebounds and only one turnover in 30 minutes. His field goal percentage this year of 53.3 ranks eighth in the Little East. 

Men’s Indoor Track & Field Report #2

Rookie Track Athlete-of-the-Week

Ryan Escoda, Fr., Newtown

After winning the 3,000 meters in a field of 29 and qualifying for the New England Division III Championships in the process in his first collegiate meet Dec. 1, Escoda followed up Saturday at the Rhode Island College Invitational by setting a meet record in the mile with a winning time of 4:30.76 in a field of 17 runners and earning the weekly award for the second consecutive week. He won the event by nearly 11 seconds. Escoda also ran the lead leg of the 4x800 relay which finished second by 1.43 seconds in a time of 8:39.66.
