Baseball: Warriors Break Game Open in Middle Innings, Walk Past Manhattanville

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team scored ten runs in the middle innings of a seven-inning game on only three hits in a 17-3 non-conference win over Manhattanville College Wednesday afternoon

Leading 3-2, Eastern (20-16) pushed across six runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth inning with the help of six walks, two errors and two hit-by-pitch in defeating Manhattanville (23-16) for the tenth time in the 12-game series.

In the game, eight Valiant pitchers gave up 12 hits and walked 11, hit four batters, threw two wild pitches, and committed two balks and their defense committed four errors. Eastern batters who walked or were hit by pitch came around to score seven runs. With Manhattanville's conference tournament scheduled to begin Friday, the team held out of action all four of its top pitchers..

Making his 13th appearance but first career start, Manhattanville freshman righty Nick Carita was lifted one batter into the second inning in sustaining his first career loss after two wins.

Eastern freshman Owen Marica (Haddam) had three hits, scored two runs and drove in two runs and is now 8-of-12 with six runs and four RBI in his last four games. Senior Alex Parkos (Meriden) reached three times on a hit, walk and error and scored three runs, while junior John Mesagno (Tappan, NY) also scored three times and was credited with two RBI when he walked and was hit-by-pitch, respectively, with the bases loaded. Senior Dale Keller (Oxford) reached three times with a bunt single, hit-by-pitch and walk and scored twice.

The second of four Eastern pitchers, junior righty John Parker (Brunswick, ME) allowed two hits over two innings while fanning two and walking one to gain his his fourth win in ten decision.

Eastern plays its eighth game in nine days Thursday at Brandeis University at 7 p.m.s
