KEENE, N.H. – Senior goalkeeper Ryan Murphy (Cromwell) lowered his goals-against average to 1.25 by allowing only an "own" goal in a 1-0 Little East Conference loss to Keene State College Saturday in the conference opener for both programs at Owls Stadium.
Keene (3-3-0), the No. 4 and final seed in last year's LEC playoffs, was credited with the only goal a minute into the second half to become the first team to shut out Eastern (4-1-0), which had outscored its first four opponents, 16-5. The Warriors missed last year's LEC playoffs for the first time in 11 years.
Keene outshot Eastern, 20-8, with Keene freshman keeper Gavin Fitzpatrick needing one save for his first shutout and first victory in his second start. Murphy stopped five shots in the 12th 1-0 loss of his four-year career.
Eastern hosts Saint Joseph's College (L.I) in a non-conference match Tuesday at 4 p.m.
