NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's soccer extended its unbeaten streak to ten games, outshooting Eastern Connecticut State University, 20-3, and sending the Warriors to their fifth loss in six contests away from Thomas Nevers Field with a 2-0 non-conference victory Tuesday afternoon at Freeman Field.
Ranked fifth in New England, Conn (7-0-3) defeated Eastern (5-6-0) for the seventh time in the last nine meetings. The Warriors have allowed 11 goals in their last five matches after limiting their first six opponents to a total of two en route to a 4-1-0 record.
Ben Manoogian scored his sixth goal of the season and added a helper and freshman A.J. Marcucci needed only two saves to extend his team's shutout streak to 539 minutes and 33 seconds.
Conn dominated from start to finish, preventing Eastern from taking a corner kick and accumulating six of its own.
After Conn failed to capitalize on numerous opportunities, Christian Murphy provided a spark off the bench to get the hosts on the scoreboard just 31 seconds before the break. With time winding down in the first half, the junior sent in a corner kick that Manny Balbontin collected and headed over to Manoogian for the team's first goal of the match.
The Camels kept their foot on the gas pedal throughout the second frame. The team attempted two corner kicks and had a shot that came off the foot of Graham Koval bounce off the post in the opening minutes of action. In the 69th minute, Ben Highton provided insurance by taking a pass from Manoogian and dribbling around an unprotected freshman keeper Kyle Boutot (Tolland), before firing on an open net. Boutot took over for junior Ryan Murphy (Cromwell) (five saves) to start the second half, making four saves in 39 minutes. In his first collegiate appearance, freshman Jack VanRooyen (Wayland, MA) made one save in the final six shutout minutes.
Marcucci, who has played practically all of the minutes between the pipes during the shutout streak, earned his fifth clean sheet of the season by turning away two shots.
Eastern hosts Western Connecticut Saturday at 11 a.m. in a Little East Conference match.
