McGill, Mihalek Among Student-Athletes Recognized at Annual Awards Banquet

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Adrianna Mihalek (Woodbury) and Lawrence McGill (New Haven) are among the Eastern Connecticut State University’s departmental award-winners for 2016-17.

A four-year volleyball player, Mihalek became the 19th recipient of the Bonnie J. Edmondson Senior Female SportsPerson-of-the-Year Award. McGill, a four-year member of the track & field program, became the 19th recipient of the Senior Male Francis E. Geissler Male SportsPerson-of-the-Year Award.

The Edmondson Award is named after Eastern’s former track & field star Bonnie Edmondson’87 and the Geissler Award in the name of Eastern’s former athletic director and basketball and baseball coach Francis Geissler. The awards recognize athletic excellence, dedication, loyalty, enthusiasm, integrity, spirit, and devotion to the team.

Among additional award-winners for 2016-17 are Jake Fitzgerald with the Morrell Service Award and the women’s soccer team with the Faculty Athletic Representative award for academic excellence.

A record 68 individuals received an E-Club Scholar-Athlete Award. Thirty-eight were recognized as outstanding scholar-athletes (minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50) and 30 as scholar-athletes (minimum cumulative GPA between 3.15 and 3.49). Juniors and seniors are eligible for the scholar-athlete awards.

Additional awards to be presented at the conclusion of the academic year are the male and female Team Sport Athlete-of-the-Year, male and female Team Sport Rookie-of-the-Year and the Individual Sport Athlete-of-the-Year Award and Individual Sport Rookie-of-the-Year Award.

Mihalek was a four-year starter and one of only two players in program history to record both 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. She was a four-time All-Little East Conference selection, 2013 LEC and Eastern Rookie-of-the-Year, three-time LEC All-Academic qualifier and an Academic All-America nominee.

In addition to her commitments to her sport and to her academics, Mihalek has been involved in countless extracurricular activities during her four-year undergraduate experience. She has served as a Student Ambassador and as a member of SAAC, vice president of the Pre-Law Society, as a Public Relations Officer for the History Club, Vice President of the Organization of Mediterranean American Students, and as a member of the People Helping People Club, to name just a few.

A team captain, McGill has been involved in team community projects such as the Little Manchester Road Race, Willimantic Town Cleanup, and Willimantic Classic Half Marathon. He also represented Eastern as one of 300 individual nationwide at the NCAA Leadership Conference this past fall. As a member of the indoor and outdoor track and field program, McGill has run at distances from 200 and 1000 meters and is a member of the program’s record-setting indoor 4x800 meter relay.

Fitzgerald has served as a lifeguard supervisor for three years, working during the semester, during intersession and in the summers. According to his supervisor, Diana Pepin, Jake is “extremely reliable, caring, and in control of any issue that arises. He is mature beyond his years. He is able to problem-solve on the fly and is a team player, helping out whenever and wherever he is needed.”

The Morrell Service Award is named in honor of brothers John ’83, Tim ’84, Patrick ’87, and Brian’93 of New Britain, who served the athletic department in a variety of capacities as undergraduates, most notably in the area of event management.

The women’s soccer team recorded a cumulative team GPA of 3.40 this past fall, with nine of the 12 eligible players earning an E-Club Scholar-Athlete Award (eight of them “Outstanding” awardees) and 13 of the 19 eligible players earning a spot on the Little East Conference All-Academic Team (the most qualifiers of any of the seven LEC fall programs).
