Haley Knox / Summering in the Heartland: Research, Running and Corn... Lots of Corn

In her own words: “This summer I am a part of the math Research Experience for Undergraduates at Iowa State University. Specifically, I am a part of a group consisting of six undergraduates from across the country, two graduate students and a professor at ISU. This internship is eight weeks, and while I am here, I am doing my summer training for cross-country. There are a lot of bike paths, gravel roads, and endless parks to explore on my runs (and of course, corn fields). After I return home, I will also be going on vacation to South Carolina for a week!”

Last year at Eastern: The three-sport athlete came into her own as a record-setting member of the indoor and outdoor track & field programs. A Bristol native, Haley earned Little East Conference honors three times in middle distance events at both the conference’s indoor and outdoor championships. Indoors, she was fourth at 1000 meters in New England Alliance scoring – establishing a program record of 3:09.91 -- and helped the 4x800 relay place second in the LEC and third in the Alliance scoring. Outdoors, she ran to a sixth-place finish in Alliance scoring in the 800 and was a member of the 4x800 relay which took second in the conference scoring and third in Alliance scoring. One week after the conference meet, she teamed on the record-setting (9:54.89) 4x800 relay at the New England Division III Championships. Last fall, Haley placed 25th overall in a field of 85 at the Little East Cross Country Championships, then qualified as one of the team’s top seven runners for the New England Regional Championships two weeks later.

More about Haley: A mathematics major, Haley achieved LEC All-Academic honors (minimum 3.30 GPA) in all three seasons in her first year of eligibility last year. Along with her teammates, the cross country program amassed the highest cumulative GPA (3.43) among all of Eastern’s athletic programs and was a key reason that the Eastern athletic program won the President’s Cup for Little East academic supremacy for the third straight year. At Bristol Central HS, Haley ran cross country and track and also played softball and basketball. A four-year cross country runner, Haley achieved all-conference status twice in that sport and was named to the All-Bristol Press Team in cross country and outdoor track as a senior. She also served as a cross country captain as a senior.
